BME Women’s Experiences of Gender Based Violence

This session will raise awareness and broaden understanding of the varied issues for black and minority ethnic (BME) women and their children experiencing domestic abuse, forced marriage and other types of gender based violence. It will explore the social, cultural and religious factors which impact upon BME women’s experiences of gender based violence.
The session will address the following learning issues:
• The concept of ‘Honour’ and how it affects BME Women and their children
• How domestic abuse affects BME Women and their children
• Internal and external barriers facing BME women and their children
The session will be facilitated by Anila Mirza. Anila has worked for Shakti Women’s Aid since 2005 and is the Team Leader of the Outreach Service. Shakti Women’s Aid is the support organisation for BME women and children experiencing gender-based violence, and supported by Scottish Women’s Aid.
