How to lead from a position of vulnerability

Creative Help

This event is in the past

As humans, we sometimes hold onto the metaphor of a leader being someone who leads from the front: standing strong in the face of adversity, with all the answers and a firm plan. But what if we don’t have the answers or feel we can give our people the reassurance they’re after? What if we, ourselves, feel vulnerable too?

In this session, we will look at what it is to lead from a position of vulnerability and how, with the right tools and mindset, this can actually be used as a source of strength. It’s fair to say that when any of us are faced with uncertainty or a threat to our way of life, we feel anxious. And of course, feeling this way for too long can overwhelm us and we start to function less well. It’s the body’s way of telling us we may need to do something different. Handled in the right way though, these feelings can actually help us.

The good news for us as leaders, executives and trustees is that with an understanding of how our minds work in these types of situations and some basic tools, we can turn this sense of vulnerability to our advantage, by showing up as leaders in an authentic way. Not having all the answers gives us permission to co-create solutions with our colleagues and stakeholders - and in the long run, this can develop solid and long-lasting relationships.

We will explore some of these ideas and strategies and to accept that as leaders, we don’t always have to have all of the answers, all of the time.

Hold the Space online workshop and discussion series

We at Creative Help are offering a new series of six conversations with the title of Hold the Space. We want you to hold a regular monthly slot in your diary (October – March, First Wednesday @ 4pm) and thematically we will “hold the space” to support chief executives in a safe environment for open and confidential dialogue. Please note, you don’t have to be a CEO – you could be a trustee or chair who is looking to better support your CEO.
