A leading voice for human rights

Baroness Shami Chakrabarti will be keynote speaker at Scotland’s International Development Alliance’s annual conference on 20 September 2022.

Chakrabarti is a leading voice for human rights and is the former director of human rights pressure group Liberty.

In 2016 she was made a life peer and held the role of shadow attorney general until 2020.

She joins a diverse line up of speakers to discuss global citizenship, climate justice and international development.

Other conference speakers will include representatives from the Scottish government; Scotland’s partner countries in the global south; climate justice activists; economists; and global sustainable development experts. A central theme of the conference will be Scotland’s role as a good global citizen.

Chakrabarti said: “I’m delighted to be speaking at this timely event exploring Scotland’s role in tackling human rights abuses and supporting fair and equitable sustainable development. Scottish civil society demonstrates good global citizenship in many ways, and I’m keen to contribute to the discussion about how to build on this in such a troubling global context.”

Frances Guy, chief executive of Scotland’s International Development Alliance, said: “We’re pleased to be welcoming Shami Chakrabarti to Edinburgh to hear her thoughts on how all of us can contribute to a fairer world.

"As we face numerous global crises, the time is right to consider what meaningful action we can take here and elsewhere to truly show global solidarity. I’m looking forward to a day of stimulating debate, inspiring vision and commitment to action from all involved.”

The conference takes place on 20 September 2022 at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh and online. Tickets are available at: www.intdevalliance.scot/conference
