The CCA in Glasgow has been locked out its premises following a devastating blaze at the School of Art

A charity arts centre is on track to return to its home by the middle of this month.

The Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Glasgow has been closed following a blaze at the nearby Glasgow School of Art in June.

The charity has not been able to hold events at its base since then, leading to it facing a fight to survive.

However the art school has confirmed that work to stabilise the west side of the building is on track to be completed by 14 October, which should allow the CCA to return to its home.

Art school director Professor Tom Inns said: "We've been working particularly closely with the CCA to make sure that the damage to the gallery ceiling can be repaired and they can re-commission the building both for the cultural tenants and for public events as soon as possible.

"We know that there are ongoing concerns about road access in and around Garnethill, so once the work on the Mack stabilisation is finished our next priority will be taking down the damaged rain screen from the Reid Building so that the council can move to reopen Renfrew Street to single-lane traffic before the worst of the winter weather sets in."

A statement from the CCA last month said they appreciated the ongoing support of the public, and expected to remain closed until 15 October.

A spokesman said: “We have been in touch with Glasgow City Council. Following discussions with colleagues in building control, Glasgow School of Art has informed Glasgow City Council that it is working to a revised provisional date of 14 October. This is potentially subject to change and is dependent on both weather and the technical progress being made by contractors.”
