Organisers say the 2016 event is set to be the most successful yet.

This year’s Giving Tuesday is set to be the UK’s most successful yet, according to early reports.

More than 1500 charities and business are backing the annual event, organised by the Charities Aid Foundation.

Highlights so far include Bake Off winner Candice Brown appearing in a video to promote Paypal’s offer to add £1 to Cancer Research UK donations over £10 made using the service.

Staff at Marie Curie UK, meanwhile, put pen to paper to write personalised thank you letters to their supporters.

And in London, a cross-party group of MPs sang Christmas Carols on College Green with all proceeds going to support the work of doctors in Aleppo.

By 2pm on Tuesday, the hashtag #givingtuesday had been used 30,000 times in the UK while the campaign’s total global reach on the social media platform was a staggering 435 million.

The event has also been backed by celebrities including Ricky Gervais, JK Rowling and Tom Daley.

This year’s theme is “do good stuff”, which has seen organisations and businesses encourage staff, customers and the public to give money, time or support a good cause.

Kim Roberts, senior campaigns officer at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “#givingtuesday is all about people joining together to do support good causes. It has been fantastic to see people all over the country getting behind #givingtuesday to support huge numbers of charities in a multitude of different ways.

“This is the UK’s third #givingtuesday and looks set to be the biggest yet.

“Whether it’s giving money, volunteering time, promoting a favourite charity or doing something nice to put a smile on the face of a colleague, there’s a huge appetite to do good stuff.”
