Headgear selfies go viral after cancer patient Sara loses hair to chemo

A woman is inspiring thousands of fellow cancer patients going through chemotherapy by posting selfies in outrageous headgear – and raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

Sara Cutting, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, admits to never posting a selfie until she got the idea to symbolise her hair loss with a series of outlandish headwear.

She posted the first selfie on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter the morning of her first chemotherapy appointment, and within hours had taken more than £1,000.

“I had never taken a selfie before, and always been careful never to post anything personal on Facebook, so this was a big step,” she said.

“But it’s been a really energising experience. There have been days when I felt so poorly I would just get up, get the face ready, get the head ready, get the makeup on – and just crawl back to bed.”

So far the 47 year old from Brighton has raised over £8,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and promises to continue raising cash until the first anniversary in October of the start of her treatment.

“It’s not all been misery, cancer,” she said.

“There have been some incredibly uplifting and positive experiences from it all.”

With her chemo complete, Sara now faces a month of radiotherapy.
