Thousands of people want to back local charities – but many are uncertain how to support them.

New research from the People’s Postcode Lottery has shown that the majority of people value local groups, but nearly a third of people (32%) do not know how they can support charities in their area.

The study saw Brits questioned on the importance of charity, ahead of the annual Local Charities Day tomorrow (Friday 15 December).

Of those polled, 61% valued the contribution that local charities make whilst more than a quarter (27%) said they would do more to support groups in their area.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Fiona Phillips said: “Helping local charities doesn’t need to be an enormous commitment.

“If people can spare an hour of their week to volunteer, this can be really rewarding and offers much needed support to local initiatives.

“Local groups are crying out for people to volunteer their professional skills so think how your day job could benefit a good cause on your doorstep. Many local charities will have social media pages that you can follow and keep up to date with what they’re doing.”
