Duchess puts Murray's sweatband up for auction
Andy Murray may have breached royal etiquette but it appears all to have been in a good cause after the auction of his sweaty wristband sold for £2,100.
Murray threw the cotton band into the royal box after his Wimbledon quarter finals victory against Robin Haase, only to hit Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall live on air.
A flustered Camilla held onto it, got Murray to sign before putting it up for auction on eBay.
Some 45 bids were made, climbing from an initial £50 to an eventual £2,100.
The cash will go to the Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust, a charity chosen by the Scottish tennis ace.
Speaking of the moment he hurled the band into the No.1 Court crowd during his match, Murray said: “It wasn't at all on purpose, I was trying to throw it into where all of the fans were and it kind of bent right round to the left.
“I saw (the Duchess) just after the march when I was walking back to the locker rooms and said "I saw I hit you with the wristband."
“The duchess just opened up her bag and she had it.”
Murray was eventually knocked out of the tournament in the semi finals by Roger Federer.
