Campaigning charity in last gasp plea for funding
A leading refugee and asylum seeker charity has launched an urgent plea for funds.
Positive Action in Housing (PAIH) says its destitution service – the longest running service of its kind - will be lost if it can't source new funding.
The call has gone out after the charity lost £40,000 from BT MyDonate, the commission-free fundraising platform, after it closed on 30 June.
Robina Qureshi, PAIH director, said frontline services will be reviewed in November but the organisation needed funding to sustain essential services.
“We run the longest running destitution service for refugees and asylum seekers and migrants in Glasgow, considerable expertise that was built up over decades, since the turn of the century, will be lost if we have to cut provision,” she told TFN.
“We get some funding from charitable trusts, Scottish government and the public. But we need regular donations to sustain our services.”
Its vital support has come to the fore recently with the Serco evictions. The charity says it is providing crisis advice, signposting and emergency relief grants to 100 families and individuals who have been told they are being Serco accommodation.
They include the elderly, the sick and families with disabled adult children.
In an appeal to supporters, PAIH asks family and friends to consider a monthly donation to “help us sustain essential projects which are the result of years of expertise in dealing with the destitution crisis.
It asks: “A monthly donation of £10 (or more if you can afford it) will help us plan crisis support and make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of women, men, families and unaccompanied asylum seeking children supported by Positive Action in Housing.
"It will help us sustain projects such as Room for Refugees, our Emergency Relief Fund which distributed over £60,000 in 2018-19."
PAIH has been running for over 30 years after being established in response to the need of black and minority ethnic people’s housing needs in Glasgow.
