Change a life in your lunch break says Edinburgh charity

Care and Repair Edinburgh believes changing a life is as easy as changing a lightbulb as it calls on more city residents to volunteer

A charity working with older people in Edinburgh is encouraging staff to do something life-changing with their lunch break.

Care and Repair Edinburgh is seeking to find new volunteers who can help out older people with household maintenance and ensure they are safe and comfortable at home.

It needs people to do anything from changing a light bulb to putting up some shelves or doing a spot of plumbing and is particuarly keen to hear from DIY enthusiasts and tradespeople.

Under the banner, changing a life is as easy as changing a light bulb, Care and Repair Edinburgh is calling on kind-hearted workers and recently retired people wanting to keep active to help expand the support it gives to communities.

The charity enables older people and people with disabilities to continue to live independently and safely in their own homes through the provision of a wide variety of services from its handyperson service, a home from hospital service, small repairs service, adaptations/home improvement service and trades referral service.

Graham Harper, chief executive of Care and Repair Edinburgh, said: “Our handyperson volunteers really can change lives in their lunch-break and we are looking for more people to join us. However much or little spare time you have, using it to help an older person would mean so much to them.

"By helping to carry out odd jobs, DIY or something as simple as changing a light bulb, you can help older and disabled people in your community live richer, more fulfilling lives at home because they can retain their independence.”
