Food Train is looking for healthy volunteers to help distribute vital food supplies to older people

Volunteers are being sought to help ensure vulnerable communities remain fed throughout the coronavirus crisis.

As Britain goes into lockdown, Food Train has issued an appeal for healthy volunteers to come forward to ensure vital supplies are delivered to older people in Scotland.

The charity has pledged that it is putting the health of its volunteers, and the people it supports, at the centre of everything it does.

Food Train chief executive Michelle Carruthers said: “The Scottish Government has issued strict instruction to the general public to limit public movement and reduce the risk of viral spread. Food Train provides an essential service to those most vulnerable and at risk of the virus.

“We form part of the essential social care that is being provided and your help is critical at this time. We will need extra volunteers who are under 70, healthy and well, to come forward, now more than ever before we need your help.

“Please be reassured that we have your safety and the wellbeing of our members at the core of all we do and are taking every step within our power to protect everyone while ensuring vital food is supplied.”
