TFN's snippets of some of the activities going on in charities around Scotland

The new premises of Edinburgh community group The Junction have been officially opened by Sir Harry Burns, chief medical officer for Scotland. The support group for 12-21 year-olds has moved just along the road from 160 Great Junction Street to number 82-86.

Butterfly Conservation Scotland is delighted to announce one of Scotland’s rarest butterflies – the chequered skipper – is far more widespread than previously thought. A survey with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee found the species in areas it had not previously been recorded.

Alzheimer Scotland has received £500 after the City of Edinburgh Council run Drumbrae Care Home was nominated for the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards 2014. Each nominee was asked to name a charity who received a cheque if the home was shortlisted.

Nearly 40,000 Scots took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. House sparrows continued to be the most commonly spotted while chaffinch, starling, blackbird and blue tit all held on to their places rounding out the top five.

Around 350 people left their comfortable beds and braved the cold, wind and snow to sleep under the stars in a cardboard box to raise awareness of the plight of homeless people last Friday night. The Bethany Christian Trust’s Big Sleepout 2014 took place in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, St. Andrews and Dunfermline.

Over 3000 volunteers across the UK are expected to help clean beaches of litter this weekend as part of Surfers Against Sewage’s Big Spring Beach Clean. There are 11 beach cleans planned in Scotland with more details at sas.org.uk/events.

Older people’s charity Royal Voluntary Service is calling on office workers to take a tea break. Its research showed over 200,000 workers in Scotland say they don’t have a but the charity has started the Great Brew Break campaign which will see tea events held throughout the country from 28 April – 4 May to raise funds to help the charity deliver it services.
