The Green Lady is said to have haunted the corridors of Crathes Castle since Victorian times
A family photo could be the latest sighting of one of Scotland’s best-known ghosts.
Bill Andrew, from Bridge of Alford, was visiting National Trust-owned Crathes Castle with daughter Coleen, granddaughter Jessica and great-grandson Findley when he took the snap.
When Mr Andrew showed the picture to his daughter, she spotted a shadowy shape standing in the castle’s doorway.
The family contacted staff in search of an explanation, and were told this was the latest in a string of ghostly sightings at the Aberdeenshire castle dating back to Victorian times.
Property manager James Henderson said: “There have been a number of mysterious sightings in and around the castle of late, in particular around Halloween, and the castle guides have reported that things have felt strange.
“They have reported a chill down the back in an otherwise warm room, odd noises in an otherwise empty building. Could this photograph be related to this? Or, perhaps it is a sighting of the Green Lady.”
The Green Lady is said to have haunted the corridors of Crathes Castle since the 18th century, appearing as a girl in a green dress carrying an infant in her arms.
It is believed that the skeletons of a woman and child were discovered under the fireplace during renovations and that Queen Victoria herself witnessed the apparition.
Visitors to the castle have also reported sightings of another ghost, known as Lady Agnes. The noblewoman is said to have died suddenly after poisoning her son’s sweetheart and now reappears on the anniversary of her death.
