Charity warns it is not calling people

Crimestoppers has discovered fraudsters have hijacked its phone number and are cold calling members of the public.

Scammers are somehow calling people from its 0800 555 111 number saying they are “Crimestoppers at the Home Office” then asking for personal details.

The independent charity, which assists police forces by allowing people to anonymously report information on crimes, says it is not making the calls and anyone getting one should report it.

A spokesperson from Crimestoppers said: “We are not calling people.

“We do not and cannot call people from 0800 555 111.

“We would never ask for personal details like this.”

If you get a call claiming to be from Crimestoppers never give out any personal information, and report the incident to Action Fraud.
