More than £28 million has been raised by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal to help Rohingya people fleeing violence in Myanmar.

The DEC, which is composed of 13 major aid charities, launched its appeal last October and it is due to close at the end of August.

A report reveals the amount raised, which includes £5m in match-funding from the UK government.

It has helped aid hundreds of thousands of Muslims who have fled Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh since 25 August last year.

It's estimated that 1.3 million people need humanitarian assistance as a result of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar’s Rakhine province.

The DEC – whose members include the British Red Cross and Oxfam - said the funds raised had been used to provide more than 351,000 people – more than the population of Cardiff – with food assistance.

It had also provided 34,000 families with household essentials such as blankets and pots and pans and 124,400 people with clean drinking water and sanitation and distributed materials to build shelters for 19,500 families.
