Quarriers Summer Appeal has given 1000 vulnerable youngsters unforgettable trips this year.

Vulnerable children and families were treated to a day at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum paid for by donations to a national appeal.

Since launching in May, Quarriers’ 2017 Summer Appeal has raised almost £27,000 and given nearly 1000 children unforgettable days out.

The Riverside trip saw 140 children from Quarriers Family Resource Centre in Ruchazie, Glasgow, enjoy the museum’s 3000 exhibits and a lunch at its cafe.

In early August, the centre will take 170 children and families descend on Troon beach for sea, sandcastles and - hopefully - sun.

Not only do these trips create memories, they help children to build their confidence

The outings organised by the social care charity are the latest in a busy summer of activities across Scotland, with young carers in Moray set to enjoy a visit to an indoor climbing centre, coasteering, shore walks and cave exploring.

Other experiences include visits to the Caerlaverock Wetlands Trust Lego Trail and Solway Swim by Quarriers service users in Dumfries and Galloway. For one young boy, this was his first visit to a swimming pool.

Alice Harper, Quarriers chief executive said: “The Quarriers Summer Appeal days out are always incredibly special and children, parents and staff at Quarriers look forward to them every year. Each trip is planned out to the smallest detail and staff pull out all the stops to ensure there’s a smile on everyone’s face.

“Summer holidays can add to the pressures of family life, acting as an extra financial burden for families. A day trip is just simply not feasible, both in terms of cost and the logistics behind organising a trip for children with additional needs.

“Without the generous support of our donors, many children and families supported by Quarriers wouldn’t have the opportunity to create these special summer memories they can cherish long after the dark nights draw in.

“Not only do these trips create memories, they help children to build their confidence as they try out new activities and make new friends. They go back to school and nursery with an exciting story they can share with their teachers and peers.”
