Historical memorabilia that could help trigger memories is being collected at Co-op Funeralcare branches in Glasgow.

Funeral directors are seeking donations for memory boxes to help those living with dementia.

Historical memorabilia that could help trigger memories is being collected at Co-op Funeralcare branches across Glasgow, and especially in Baillieston and Shettleston.

Items will be packed in memory boxes, which will then be donated to local care homes and day centres.

The boxes are used to encourage people with dementia to engage with the memorabilia, prompting conversations about their lives and to reminisce about the past.

Funeral director Derek Smith came up with the idea when he saw how many people within his local community were being affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s.

He said: “The memory boxes will give us the opportunity to support those living with dementia in our community.

“Not only do they help raise awareness of dementia, they’ll also help us to engage with people who wouldn’t usually communicate easily with others”.

Funeral arranger Rose McGran added: “We’re currently looking for donations from local residents to include in our memory boxes.

“Whether it’s an old shilling or a football programme from the 1900s, all donations are greatly appreciated.’’
