A festival promises 12 days of “inspiring films and captivating conversations” this September.

The Take One Action festival will feature more than 40 films that spotlight social issues, international campaigns and real-life stories from around the globe.

More than 20 countries will be represented in the programme, which includes seven UK premieres and 11 Scottish premieres.

Organisers say at least 50% of all the films being shown have been directed or co-directed by women.

Highlights include Tomorrow, a “beautifully uplifting global tour” of grassroots environmental movements, arms trade expose Shadow World, and Sonita, the Sundance Award-winning story of a young Afghan woman who dreams of becoming a rap star.

Campaigners who will be attending include NSA whistleblower William Binney, Palestinian contemporary dancer Maher Shawamreh and First Nations author and campaigner Caleb Behn, all of whom are subjects of films being shown at the festival.

Events will also include workshops and a free screening of The True Cost, a “shocking” investigation of the environmental and social consequences of the disposable clothing industry.

The festival runs from 14-25 September in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Events will be held later in the year in Aberdeen and Inverness.
