Data reveals charity breaches

More than 500 data breaches were filed by Charities last year according to England’s Information Commissioner.

The figures are revealed in the body’s latest annual report.

It says it received 11,854 reports of personal data breaches from all sources during the year to the end of March, down from 13,840 in the previous year.

Charities reported 4.5% of the breaches during the year, which is equivalent to about 535 cases.

The charity sector was eighth on the list of the sectors producing the highest proportion of data breaches throughout the year, well behind the health sector in first place on 19.7% of cases.

The report says 95% of all data breaches required no action by the regulator, but does not break this figure down by sector.
