He goes from running a £400m income to £400,000
Former Oxfam GB chief executive Mark Goldring is to head up a small charity supporting refugees in Oxford.
Asylum Welcome announced he will become its new director after leaving the international development charity in 2018.
Goldring has been working as a consultant since leaving Oxfam amid the safeguarding scandal, during which he came under criticism for his handling of the issue.
His new role is dwarfed by his previous: Oxfam’s income is £400m against Asylum Welcome’s £400,000 per annum.
Goldring said in his blog: “Leading Asylum Welcome, a small, local charity, focused on people in the Oxford area where I live, and nearly all of whose workforce are volunteers, might not seem the most obvious step after a career spent in larger, mostly international organisations, but it feels so right, for me, now,” he said.
Goldring said the move would bring his career full circle.
“I want to use what I’ve learnt leading and advising organisations to contribute to the wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
“Having worked on a global stage, I now want to make a difference locally. I hope that my experience will help us improve the way we receive and support refugees and asylum seekers, both in Oxford and nationally.”
