Scottish Government withdraws grant from Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs

The Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (SAYFC) has announced the Scottish Government has withdrawn its financial support

The annual grant of £66,000 which is managed by the department for children and young people will result in a loss of the association’s annual income by 13%.

SAYFC is Scotland’s largest rural youth organisation.

The association offers a crucial network for many young people in rural Scotland as well as unique personal development opportunities

This is the first time in nearly 70 years it will receive no financial support from the Scottish Government impacting its more than 3500 members across Scotland.

The association, which supports individuals aged 14 to 30 years of age, provides personal development opportunities through their network via events, competitions, training and travel. This helps reduce rural isolation and increases individuals confidence and skills, which will benefit them throughout life.

Chief executive Penny Montgomerie said: “We are disappointed that the Scottish Government has taken this decision to no longer support SAYFC.

“The association offers a crucial network for many young people in rural Scotland as well as unique personal development opportunities.

“The association is currently growing from strength to strength with membership now higher than it has been since 1998.”

Montgomerie did insist the organisation would continue to work hard for its members despite the setback.

She continued: “Looking to the future we are optimistic that although there are tough financial times ahead over the coming months we will continue to focus on ensuring we can develop member services, and have a relevant organisation that youth in rural Scotland want to be part of.”
