Housing association steps in

An award-winning urban garden has been saved for a Glasgow community.

Maryhill Community Garden, which sits amidst a former whisky bond, is run by a residents’ association after the group secured £250,000 in lottery cash five years ago.

However after funds ran out Maryhill Housing Association has agreed to allocate £3,000 to maintain the garden and said it would be seeking additional grants to ‘”assist” with future maintenance.

Lesley Carnegie, of Maryhill Housing Association, said: “I have been given the go ahead for 30 maintenance visits between April and October, to ensure the Maryhill Community Garden is cared for and maintained as the valuable local resource that it is.

“We have funded this work, costing just over £3000, through our own Community Fund. This Fund sets aside £60,000 a year to support local causes, groups and individuals across Maryhill and Ruchill.

“We will also be seeking additional grant funding to assist with ongoing future maintenance of the garden, on residents’ behalf.”

Maryhill HA say the community fund has recently funded new parent and toddler groups, arts projects and activities for young people.
