The Hollywood actor was presented with the money from the People’s Postcode Lottery

George Clooney didn't only find time for a sandwich during his hectic and much publicised visit to Edinburgh, he also collected a cheque for £175,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Holywood acting legend accepted the money on behalf of his humanitarian aid charity Not On Our Watch.

Founded in 2008, the charity was launched by the former ER star and some fellow Hollywood stars, including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle, to generate lifesaving assistance and protection for the vulnerable, marginalised and displaced.

The two-time Oscar winner was presented with the cheque at the lottery’s headquarters on the aptly named George Street, just minutes after visiting social enterprise coffee shop Social Bite round the corner on Rose Street.

Accepting the cheque, Clooney said: “I would like to thank players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their support of Not on Our Watch. Standing united as an international community, this funding will help us to increase global attention to human rights violations across the world.”

Clara Govier, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Not On Our Watch provides support to countries suffering at the hands of political unrest by bringing humanitarian injustices to the spotlight.

"On behalf of players, we are delighted to support this ground-breaking charity with their work.”

Clooney is is in the capital to speak at the Scottish Business Awards tonight which were launched by Social Bite founder Josh Littlejohn.

As well as posing for photographs at social bite it's been reported Clooney donated £650 in the cafe to be used to buy coffees and meals for homeless people as part of the social enterprise's suspended coffee and meals programme.
