Visa alone handled £14.2m in payments to charitable causes.

Almost £10,000 was raised every minute for good causes during this year’s Giving Tuesday, according to organisers.

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which runs the campaign in the UK, said figures from Visa showed £14.2 million was donated via their payment platforms in the UK on 3 December.

That amounts to nearly £10,000 a minute – and is a 48% rise in donations made though Visa compared to an ordinary Tuesday in 2019.

Meanwhile, global donations via PayPal totalled an incredible $106m – up from last year’s $98m.

A week-long Christmas Challenge ran by the Big Give charity raised more than £5.1m on the day, and enrolment in payday giving schemes raised a further £180,000 for charitable causes.

RBS donated £250,000 to charities chosen by its employees and customers, and made £100,000 available to match customers’ donations.

CAF’s Gráinne Mathews, Giving Tuesday lead in the UK, said she was thrilled by the positive impact of the annual campaign.

“Giving Tuesday 2019 has smashed the Charities Aid Foundation’s expectations and the hopes of our partners,” she said.

“CAF’s research has shown a worrying decline in the amount of people giving to charity, which makes Giving Tuesday so important in reminding everyone of the amazing work charities are doing and how we can help them.

“Our sincere thanks go to the many people who worked together to make a world of difference.”

More than 3,300 charities and businesses took part in this year’s event, making this Giving Tuesday the biggest yet.

Celebrities who backed the campaign this year included the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Michelle Obama and even the cast of Sesame Street.
