Borders Cycle Challenge will raise thousands in much needed cash for homeless people
Cycling enthusiasts from across Scotland are set to descend on Kelso to take on the gruelling challenge of cycling either 50 or 100 miles to raise money to help homeless and badly housed people in Scotland.
Following the success of the last two years, around 150 amateur cyclists will take on the Borders Cycle Challenge which starts and ends at Kelso Racecourse on 18 September.
Together, they aim to raise more than £10,000 for housing and homelessness charity Shelter Scotland which helps more than half a million people in Scotland affected by the housing crisis each year.
Leaving Kelso Racecourse from 7am, the route takes cyclists through some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery and several Borders towns and villages - including Greenlaw, Duns, passing Eyemouth, Swinton, on to Coldstream - and back to finish at the racecourse later in the day.
The route also includes a stamina and muscle-busting ascent of almost 2,000 metres. For less-experienced cyclists, a 50-mile route is available.

Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, said: “From the money raised last year, Shelter Scotland was able to help hundreds of people facing the tragedy of homelessness or living in poor quality housing.
“This year, with the help of our supporters, volunteers and staff, we hope to exceed that fundraising total to help even more people in need.
“We are humbled that so many cycling enthusiasts have already signed up to the challenge, and encourage anyone with a bike and enthusiasm to saddle up and join us in September for a fantastic day of cycling in the name of a very good cause.”
Taking on the challenge for the third consecutive year will be Ewen Fleming of accountants Grant Thornton and Scott Maxwell from recruitment firm Hudson.
To date the pair have raised over £15,000 for Shelter Scotland and hope to exceed that total this year.
Fleming, said: “This year’s event looks set to be the biggest and best yet. I’d encourage anyone with an interest in cycling to get involved. It’s a great day out for anyone with a bike – whether you choose the 100 mile or 50 mile route.
“Every penny raised will go to Shelter Scotland to continue their invaluable work in tackling the housing crisis and supporting some of the most vulnerable people and families in our society.”
