Stonewall has said that reports of a major split are inaccurate
An equality charity has hit out at reports of a major split.
Stonewall has called claims that it is splitting due to a row over inclusion for transgender people inaccurate.
The Telegraph reported that, following a meeting this week, a breakaway group entitled the LGB Alliance has been formed to “counteract the confusion between sex and gender which is now frequent in the public sector and in several places”.
However the charity has highlighted that none of the people involved in the new group are staff or trustees.
Paul Twocock, Stonewall interim chief executive, said: “There is no truth to reports of Stonewall ‘splitting’, so please ignore the alarmist headlines.
“These stories don’t refer to any current Stonewall staff or trustees. There is no equality for lesbian, gay and bi people without equality for trans people. We’re all united in our mission to achieving acceptance without exception for all LGBT people.”
Speakers at the LGB Alliance event included Stonewall co-founder Simon Fanshawe and Miranda Yardley. The alliance describes its mission as “asserting the right of lesbians, bisexuals and gay men to define themselves as same-sex attracted”, saying: “Gender is a social construct.”
