MP embezzled money due to foodbank

A foodbank is just one of the causes which lost out due to a former MP embezzling £25,000, it has been revealed.

Natalie McGarry admitted two charges of embezzlement when she appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week and awaits sentencing.

The court heard how she embezzled £21,000 from the Women for Independence group and also failed give donations to Perth and Kinross foodbank and to Positive Prison, Positive Future between 26 April 2013 and 30 November 2015.

McGarry was charged in 2017 over alleged fraud at Women for Independence, which was set up in the run-up to the 2014 Scottish referendum.

She had denied all of the charges, then sacked her legal team and plead guilty to two of the charges on Wednesday (24 April).

Elected as an SNP MP for Glasgow East in 2015, she withdrew the party whip when allegations emerged, choosing to become independent instead.

Attempt to recover the embezzled money through the Proceeds of Crime Act are expected to be made by the crown.
