MSPs have paid tribute to Paul Kelly, a Big issue vendor allegedly murdered in Glasgow.

MSPs have paid tribute to a popular Big Issue vendor who died in a violent incident earlier this month.

Paul Kelly, 50, who sold the magazine in Glasgow and East Kilbride, was known for his catchphrase: "Don't be shy, give it a try".

He was fatally injured during an incident at his home in Glasgow’s Knightswood area on Saturday, June 15.

A vigil was held at Mr Kelly’s spot outside Sainsbury’s on Buchanan Street on Monday, and in a motion heard at the Scottish Parliament, MSPs also paid tribute.

The motion, lodged by Monica Lennon, read: “That Parliament pays tribute to Paul Kelly, who was well known and loved in Glasgow and East Kilbride as a friendly and valued member of The Big Issue team.”

Lennon welcomed the “fond tributes” from members of the public who, she said, remembered Mr Kelly as “kind, polite, friendly, and for his good banter”.

The motion was supported by a cross-party group of MSPs including Bill Kidd, Stuart McMillan, Sandra White, James Kelly, Pauline McNeill, Bob Doris and Jackie Baillie.

Jason Cowan, 46, has been arrested and charged with murdering Mr Kelly. He has been remanded in custody and is expected in court at a later date.
