New co-CEO for Scottish environment charity

The appointment comes at an important strategic juncture for The Green Team as it heads towards its 30th anniversary in 2025

Edinburgh-based charity The Green Team has announced the appointment of Julia Duncan as co-CEO.

With a specific remit for corporate development, the role will complement the extensive operational experience of existing CEO Penny Radway, who will continue in post.

Julia brings over 30 years’ experience of developing long-lasting, innovative and diverse programmes of environmental action and volunteering for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities across Scotland.

Her career includes 10 years as business development manager for The Conservation Volunteers and 16 years as outdoor action manager for The National Trust for Scotland.

The appointment comes at an important strategic juncture for The Green Team as it heads towards its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Founded initially to enable young people to undertake environmental volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the organisation has evolved significantly over the years and continues to improve and develop the award-winning work it does to support children, families and vulnerable young people through nature connection and conservation.

The charity also aims to develop its work with partner organisations committed to actively demonstrating their corporate and environmental responsibility through employee volunteering in local green spaces and communities in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Julia joins the team at the end of October and says of her new role: “I am very excited to be working alongside Penny as co-CEO for The Green Team and supporting the organisation into its next chapter on the brink of its 30th birthday.

“This role perfectly aligns with my passion to make Scotland’s nature and greenspaces inclusive and accessible to those with the greatest barriers as well as my expertise in engaging corporate partners through sponsorship and nature-based team activities.

“Developing multi-year, high-value bids and creating services for earned income, will ensure long-term sustainability and the chance to contribute meaningfully to The Green Team’s ongoing impact in improving the life chances of our young people and greenspaces at a time when it is needed most.”

Penny, who has led The Green Team since 2000, welcomed, adding: “We are delighted to welcome Julia to The Green Team at this stage in the development of the organisation. The co-CEO model fits well with the ethos and values of The Green Team. Julia’s skills and experience will ensure we continue to deliver high impact and meaningful work with young people for the next 30 years.”
