Oxfam’s first-ever superstore will open its doors this weekend.
The international aid charity has transformed a 14,500ft2 unit in Cowley, Oxfordshire into a “destination shopping experience” stocked with the best donated and ethically-sourced gifts and homewares.
Dedicated meeting spaces will be available for use by community groups and social enterprises while interactive workshops, activities and talks will take place regularly in-store.
An Oxfam water tank has been transformed into the superstore’s cafe, and a drive-through donation point will make it as quick and easy as possible for people to drop off items.
Andrew Horton, Oxfam’s trading director, said “We’re so excited about opening our first ever superstore in Oxford – where the charity began over 75 years ago and where the first Oxfam shop opened its doors in 1948.
“The superstore will be more than a shop – it will be a place for the community to get together, a café, as well as offering a huge choice of bargains and one-of-a-kind finds in a fantastic family friendly environment.”
The superstore will be open for trading four days a week but will be accepting donations seven days a week. The charity said 11 new jobs would be supported by the store, along with numerous volunteering opportunities.
It will also support Oxfam’s Future Skills project, a volunteering, training and mentoring project for women in the UK facing barriers to building a better life.
The superstore opens its doors to the public on Saturday, 7 September.
