​Thousands set to descend on Scotland's cities to demand greater rights for cyclists

Demonstrations take place this weekend in Scotland’s major cities to demand greater rights for cyclists ahead of Scotland’s local elections.

Pedal on Parliament, a grassroots cycling campaign that each year brings thousands of cyclists to the streets, is calling for a cycle-friendly Scotland.

The sixth annual demonstration will this year be held in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness on April 22; while an event takes place in Glasgow on 23 April.

The event has always been held in Edinburgh, however a crowdfunding drive has enabled the annual protest to expand across the country.

Dr Dave Brennan, one of the original organisers of Pedal on Parliament, said: “We run Pedal on Parliament on a shoestring, but taking the message right across Scotland – not just to the politicians in Holyrood – takes more money.

“With donations from our supporters we hope that we can get the word out to everyone who’d like to see safer cycling conditions for themselves and their loved ones in Scotland.”
