KT Tunstall and Ricky Wilson among celebrities covering Rolling Stones classic
Pop stars and politicians are joining forces to record a charity single in memory of Jo Cox MP.
KT Tunstall, Steve Harley, Suzi Quatro and Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs will feature alongside parliamentarians Pete Wishart, Kevin Brennan, Sir Greg Knight, and Ian Cawsey on the record, a cover of the Rolling Stones classic track You Can’t Always Get What You Want.
Also appearing on the record will be David Gray, the Thurrock Community Choir and the voices of 25 MPs from across the political spectrum.
The single is being recorded on Thursday and will be released next year to raise funds for the launch of the Jo Cox Foundation.
More unites genuine politicians than divides them
Robin Millar, spokesman for Wishart, Brennan, Knight and Casey’s band MP4, said the group hoped to reclaim the song after it was used by Donald Trump during his US election campaign.
He said: “We are aware that the court case to prosecute the person accused of Mrs Cox’s murder begins on 14 November and that the song in question was hijacked by Donald Trump but this only increases their determination to reclaim the song and the high ground for positive outcomes.”
“Twenty-five MPs from across the political spectrum will also attend and join in the choir to reflect Jo Cox’s campaigning for Better Together, which asserts that more unites genuine politicians than divides them,” Millar added.
The recording and video will go on general release in the new year through Kobalt Music, to raise awareness of the launch of the foundation set up to give a lasting legacy to the work and life of Ms Cox, who was killed in June 2016.
