Five winners will receive scholarship funding for a postgraduate degree at the Open University or University of Edinburgh

The Postcode Lottery Green Challenge Scholarship has officially opened, giving prospective and current students the chance to secure funding for a postgraduate degree that will help lead to the development of a ‘green themed’ business concept.

The competition is a unique funding opportunity that offers students up to £20,000 to fund a postgraduate degree related to their green idea.

The competition is open now and the deadline for submitting stage one entries is 5pm on Monday 27 March. Only those studying or planning to study with Open University or the University of Edinburgh can apply.

At last year’s competition, in June 2016, green innovators became one step closer to pursuing their dreams thanks to winning one of the scholarships.

The entrepreneurs pitched their eco-friendly concepts aimed at tackling climate change head on at the final held at the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation.

Overall winner Angus McKimmon’s concept was to provide smart power solutions in the form of vehicle to grid and battery panels. Speaking after the announcement of his win, Angus said: "I'm absolutely overjoyed - and in shock! I'm so pleased to have taken part and can't wait to show the idea to even more of the green community. Now I've been given the chance to study a full-time MBA at the University of Edinburgh Business School. My advice to any applicant next year is to just take your time, think everything through and do all your research!”

Sanjay Singh, senior programmes manager at People’s Postcode Lottery said: “Green Challenge Scholarship is an amazing opportunity for such a huge range of students hoping to study at postgraduate level. Not only are the students advancing in their education but they’re coming up with fantastic ideas that will help both people and planet. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our players for making it happen.”

Chris Cox, vice principal philanthropy and advancement at The University of Edinburgh, said: “The University of Edinburgh is tremendously excited to be partnering with the People’s Postcode Lottery again to support the Green Challenge Scholarship project. Last year saw our students develop some remarkable ideas around sustainable business ventures, and the support of People’s Postcode Lottery has been invaluable in helping them undertake further study with us.

"The university is a sector leader in low carbon and sustainable business innovation, and we are delighted to continue our partnership with an organisation that so clearly shares our values and vison in this area.”
