Police are investigating after a fundraising drive claimed to be raising money for the funeral of PC Roy Buggins

A probe has been launched after a fake fundraising account was set up in the name of a police officer who died on duty.

PC Roy Buggins died suddenly while at work in Montrose on Tuesday (3 September).

The popular police officer had served for almost three decades, and an online appeal claiming to raise funds to help pay for the officer's funeral was set up on GoGetFunding.com

However police have confirmed that the account was not created by family or friends of PC Buggins and are investigating the circumstances behind it.

The account has now been removed from the site.

"Needless to say, this has caused further upset and distress to the Buggins family at an already difficult time," a police statement said.

"Should this false funding appeal reappear, we would ask everyone not to donate or contribute, and share this message to prevent others from doing so."
