​Cancer charity's annual fundraiser raised record amount last year

A record £25 million was raised by the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning last September – Macmillan’s annual fundraiser.

The event, where thousands of across the UK hold coffee mornings at home and at work, is now the most successful charity event of its kind.

In 1991, when the first official coffee morning took place, 2,600 supporters raised £208,000 with the number of registered hosts rising to over 200,000 in 2014.

The 2013 event raised £20.5m while the fundraising goal for 2014 was £23m.

In total the coffee morning have now raised a total of £139m to support people with cancer.

Macmillan’s director of fundraising, Simon Phillips, said: “We are delighted to announce that the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has raised £25m for Macmillan.

"It’s a remarkable achievement and I would like to thank all of our wonderful coffee morning hosts and guests who made this possible.

"The money raised will help fund the valuable Macmillan services and professionals who ensure no one with cancer has to face the fight alone.”

This year will see the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning celebrate its 25th birthday on Friday, 25 September with corporate sponsors M&S back on board for a fifth year.
