Illustrious line up planned for summer concert at Glasgow's St Andrews Cathedral.

A classical music concert in support of Scottish Refugee Council (SRC) is to be held at Glasgow’s St Andrew’s Cathedral.

The 3 June concert will raise funds to help men, women and children fleeing conflict and persecution in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea during the biggest refugee crisis since World War II.

Solidarietà – the Italian for solidarity, which is the theme for this year’s SRC’s Refugee Festival Scotland – is being hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute and the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

The concert is part of Refugee Festival Scotland, Tue 14 – 26 June 2016, which celebrates the contribution refugees make to Scotland’s cultural life and the welcome offered by local people.

Carlo Perotta, consul general of Italy for Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: “Last December, in a conference on the current refugee crisis held at Glasgow University, the Italian Ambassador to the UK, Pasquale Terracciano, promised we would support the Scottish Refugee Festival in 2016, a promise we have maintained by hosting this concert.

"We are also glad to learn that, after that, my French and German colleagues are also exploring ways to support the SRC for the excellent work they are doing.”

John Wilkes, chief executive of the SRC, added: “We welcome this fundraising concert as part of a year of support for the Scottish Refugee Council.

“Scotland has a proud history of welcoming refugees and Scots have shown solidarity to refugees over the last year in response to the unprecedented global humanitarian crisis.

“The money raised by this concert will help us stay at the heart of Scotland’s response to the refugee crisis.”

Solidarietà features acclaimed piano and violin duo Ani Martirossian, from Armenia, and Nobuko Murakoshi, from Japan.

The programme includes Schubert’s Ave Maria and pieces by Khaciaturian, Armenian composers Babagianian and Bagdassarian.
