Students and human rights campaigners fail in last-ditch bid to prevent Majid Ali's deportation

A Glasgow student has been deported despite a last-ditch campaign to prevent his return to Pakistan.

Students mounted vociferous protests in a bid to keep Majid Ali in Scotland but he has been sent home by the Home Office after being held in Dungavel Detention Centre.

The Glasgow College student fled his native Balochistan in southwest Pakistan in 2011 after his brother was killed and family members threatened.

The region wants autonomy from the country and has been subject to a number of insurgencies over the years. It is currently facing a crackdown from the Pakistan military.

This shows the shocking callousness of our immigration system - Gordon Maloney

Gordon Maloney, president of NUS Scotland, said: "This is a devastating outcome for Majid, and those who have rallied to his defence in recent days.

"This shows the shocking callousness of our immigration system, and the urgent need for a complete overhaul of our asylum processes.

"This country has more than enough to provide for those who need it, and it is simply unacceptable for our government to act with such a reckless disregard for human life."

Chris Stephens, SNP MP for Glasgow South West, presented a motion in the House of Commons to in a bid to prevent him being deported.

He said: "It is fairly obvious to anyone looking at this case that Majid should be allowed to stay as there would be a genuine fear for his life if he was deported.

"The student community, and the Baloch community here in Scotland, will not be ignored, and I join the demands to end the disgraceful and unfair way in which those seeking sanctuary in the UK are treated."
