Actions are expected across the UK, as part of global movement

School pupils across Scotland are going on strike in protest against the destruction of the planet.

They are walking out today (Friday, 15 February) and holding protests outside school gates, demanding world leaders take action on climate change.

Actions are expected across the UK, as part of global movement called Schools 4 Climate Action, inspired by 16-year-old Swede Greta Thunberg.

Some have already been taking #ClimateStrike action – at Ullapool Primary in the Highlands, a protest has taken place every Friday during the school week from 08:45 to 09:45am since 14 December.

The local authority there said the hour's strike is recorded as an unauthorised absence, but it incurs no punishment.

It is being backed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Living Sea Project.

The international #ClimateStrike movement is growing – with actions taking place throughout the world, including those in Australia, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Japan and more than a dozen other countries.

Momentum is growing for another co-ordinated push on 15 March.

Thunberg, who started as a lone campaigner outside the Swedish parliament, said: “There have been a number of real heroes on school strike, for instance in Scotland and Ireland, for some time now.”
