Community groups and trade unionists will demand a halt to misery-making austerity measures

Thousands of people are set to gather in Glasgow’s George Square to fire out a powerful message: Scotland is united against austerity.

A huge demonstration has been planned for Saturday, 20 June – and organisers hope it will be a major show of opposition to the Tory government at Westminster.

It is being backed by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and will coincide with a similar event in London, being organised by the People’s Assembly coalition of political and community groups.

STUC deputy general secretary, Dave Moxham said: "To coincide with the People’s Assembly event being held in London on the same day, the STUC is throwing its weight behind this major event which will underline the widespread disgust at Tory plans to embed and deepen austerity, as ever targeting the most vulnerable.

“The STUC expects that this event will be co-sponsored by a range of organisations involved in the Peoples' Assembly including major trade unions, the Radical Independence Campaign, Labour Party Campaign for Socialism, the SNP Trade Union Group, the Communist Party and anti-racist grouping Hope not Hate.

“Let's make Saturday, 20 June a truly historic event. Further announcements about how people can support and build for it will be announced in due course.”

The time of the demonstration is still to be finalised.
