The William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre was subject to an unannounced inspection

A centre to help those with epilepsy has been praised by inspectors.

The William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre in Glasgow was subject to an unannounced inspection from Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) in May.

The state-of-the-art centre, which is one of the leading epilepsy facilities in Europe, received very good ratings in all five categories of the inspection: quality of information, care and support, environment, staffing, and management & leadership.

HIS praised the centre’s environment and use of technology, and the positive, forward-thinking approach of the staff. The centre was said to be committed to improving care and meeting best practice.

A recommendation was made for the centre to improve its complaints policy, and inspectors said that the service should ensure it carries out staff supervision and appraisals in line with its own guidelines.

Gerard Gahagan, head of epilepsy services at the centre, said: “We are delighted that Health Improvement Scotland recognises the high quality of our service. This is underpinned by our continuous improvement culture and a foundation of true person-centred, safe and effective care. I would like to take the opportunity to recognise the efforts of the team in producing this culture and these results.”
