The umbrella group is set to consult its members on the possibility of a people’s vote or second referendum on the UK’s EU membership
The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is set to consult its members on a second EU referendum.
The umbrella body for Scottish charities has said concern over Brexit negotiations is increasing uncertainty within Scotland’s third sector.
And with organisations becoming more vocal in raising their concerns on the impact of a no-deal Brexit, SCVO is looking to hear thoughts from its members on the possibility of a people’s vote on any Brexit deal.
John Downie, director of public affairs at SCVO, said that third sector groups feel like their views are not being recognised as part of the negotiation process.
He said: “Supporting a people’s vote could be seen as a natural extension of SCVO’s policy position on Brexit and the democratic deficit Scotland particularly finds itself in. We plan to consult our board, policy committee and member organisations about the possibility of a people’s vote or second referendum on the UK’s EU membership.
“The Scottish third sector has been very clear that not leaving the EU would be the best option – the only alternative being continued membership of the Single Market and Customs Union, which is essential for people and communities throughout Scotland, our economy, and ultimately the well-being of our society.”
SCVO has been vocal in its belief that leaving the European Union will create uncertainty for the third sector, and created the EU are Valued campaign – which aims to encourage EU nationals to stay and continue to live and work in the Scottish third sector despite ongoing uncertainty around Brexit.
