Candidate sought to champion carers' views and interests

The search is on for a new Carers Champion to represent the interests of Glasgow’s unpaid carers.

Glasgow’s Health & Social Care Partnership (GCHSCP) is looking for someone with experience as an unpaid carer or of supporting carers, who is passionate about championing their views and interests.

Volunteers are sought with previous or current knowledge of the daily challenges faced by those who care for a loved one and views on what would make life easier. Role-share applicants are welcome to enable more people to apply and expenses will be paid to the successful candidate/s.

The Carers Champion will represent carers at GCHSCP and council meetings as well as working closely with the Carers Reference Group and local carers organisations. They’ll be consulted on policy development and practice and also convene quarterly meetings of the citywide Carers Forums.

Councillor Mhairi Hunter, Glasgow’s convenor for health and social care, said: “The experience of the pandemic has reinforced the vital role played by family carers and how important it is that carers are at the table when decisions are taken that affect them.

"We are looking for a person or people with the best interests of carers at heart who can liaise with local groups and take part in meetings of the IJB and Council. This is an important role with real influence which can help ensure unpaid carers have a strong voice in decision-making.

“Support will be provided to enable the successful candidate/s to take up the role. I’d encourage anyone interested to email me with a personal statement about their relevant experience and why they are keen to apply.”

The closing date is January 17, 2022 and applicants must live in Glasgow. The Carers Champion will be appointed following interviews. Applications containing full contact details should be emailed to mhairi.hunter@glasgow.gov.uk
