The phrase sleeping like a baby may be a cliché, but to some exhausted parents the reality is a nightmare of sleep deprivation.

The top tips guide from the Parenting Across Scotland includes creating quiet time before bedtime, avoiding television or screens at night and keeping a sleep diary.

We all need support and a bit of advice to be the best parents we can be - Cara Hilton MSP

It is just part of a new campaign, in honour of the charity's 10th anniversary, designed to help parents get through some of the trickier times of childhood and adolescence with their kids.

The campaign is being supported by a range of MSPs including the minister for Children and Young People, Aileen Campbell, who has not long returned to work from maternity leave and has created a blog for the campaign.

Dunfermline MSP and mother of three, Cara Hilton, is sharing her parenting top tips as part of the campaign, said: “I’m delighted Parenting across Scotland have developed these Ten Top Tips. We all need support and a bit of advice to be the best parents we can be. Parenting can be stressful and it’s definitely a challenge, but it’s the best job in the world!”

Aberdeen Donside and father of two, MSP Mark McDonald will also be sharing his #toptips in a blog for the awareness raising campaign.

He said: “This is a great initiative, and I hope that my thoughts and tips on parenting are useful. At the end of the day most parenting is a combination of careful planning and clever improvisation, and the balance is often skewed more towards the improvisation! I hope parents across Scotland will find this to be a helpful resource.”

On the last Tuesday of September and three in October the PAS Twitter feed – @ScotParents – will be sharing excerpts top tips from parents.

And the charity is calling for parents across Scotland, nurseries, charities and others to join in by sharing their own tips on Twitter using the hashtag #pas10.
