Africa benefits from craft beer's success

Social enterprise Brewgooder is celebrating its one year anniversary working with Asda after sales helped to supply clean drinking water to more than 5,000 people in Malawi.

Brewgooder, which is currently stocked at 375 Asda stores across the UK, is a craft beer label that donates 100% of its profits to clean water charities.

Set up by Alan Mahon (pictured above) 18 months ago, the organisation was one of the first to take part in Asda’s Social Enterprise Supplier Academy, a UK first which launched last year in partnership with Social Investment Scotland (SIS).

The academy helped the brewer to secure its first national supermarket listing with the retailer.

Mahon commented: “On behalf of all the team, we’d like to say a massive thank you to Asda shoppers and colleagues, who have helped us to supply clean drinking water to more than 5,000 people in Malawi, which is amazing.

“As one of the leading supermarkets, it’s a large route to market and a fantastic platform to get our message and our beers out to customers. With the volume of scale involved, it will accelerate our impact and the number of clean water projects we can support.”

Alastair Davis, SIS chief executive, said: “By promoting social enterprise products as viable alternatives to their commercial counterparts, we have a fantastic opportunity to significantly increase the revenues raised by the sector and, in turn, create much more sustainable and long term social impacts for our communities up and down the country.”
