Niall Christie has been shortlisted for an Orwell Prize
A TFN reporter has been nominated for one of the most prestigious prizes in UK journalism.
Niall Christie is in the running for an Orwell Prize for his reporting on how homeless people are being let down in Edinburgh.
A year ago, Niall and TFN made headlines around the world following an exclusive report on how vulnerable families were being shipped out of Scotland’s capital to make way for fans attending last summer’s Taylor Swift mega-concerts.
Niall followed this up with a series of investigations into homelessness in Edinburgh, in the process revealing that the city council has broke the law 800 times.
This year, Niall’s diligent reporting uncovered the shocking fact that there are whole periods where no social housing is available in the capital.
His exclusives have lead to calls for action and change from charities and campaign groups.
The Orwell Prize is among the most prestigious in British journalism. Only the very best get near the shortlisting stage.
Niall has been shortlisted for the 2025 Reporting Homelessness Prize.
Robert Booth, one of the judges, said: “We were impressed by this expose of the impact of Taylor Swift’s world tour on people in temporary accommodation in Scotland.
“The journalist was swift to spot the consequences of evictions for hundreds of families and persisted with the story to hold the authorities accountable for breaking the law.”
The winner will be revealed next month.
