Spanish charity hits on way to raise funds from YouTube
A Spanish charity is cashing in on what it describes as the most boring viral video ever made.
Arrels Fundació, which was set up in 1987 to help the homeless people of Barcelona, posted a one minute 42 second clip (below) on its YouTube page and pleaded for people to watch and share it.
Despite being called ‘The most boring viral video’, amazingly nearly 600,000 people have watched since it was uploaded in May.
The video isn’t what you would expect though from a charity fighting homelessness.
Instead of highlighting the work Arrels Fundació does, or the plight of homeless people in the city, the video explains YouTube’s advertising policy.
A British man, who says he was once homeless, explains the way it works on YouTube is that the more views a video gets the more whoever created the video gets paid from advertisers who place their ads before and during clips.
In the charity's case, the more people who watch the video the more money the charity receives.
And it seems people are loving the idea and watching and sharing it in their thousands so Arrels Fundació gets a boost to its funds.
