Sue Walker has been Scotland’s chief commissioner for five years.

A Dunfermline woman who has helped thousands of girls to grow in confidence and realise their potential has received Girlguiding’s top honour for her outstanding service.

Sue Walker, a unit leader with 1st Limekilns Brownies and Girlguiding Scotland’s lead volunteer, was presented with a Laurel Award in recognition of her work at a special reception held at Dalmeny House in South Queensferry.

Since joining as a Brownie aged seven, Ms Walker has shown a lifelong commitment to Girlguiding.

In her time with the organisation, she has supported hundreds of girls as they enjoy new experiences, whether helping them to achieve badges or taking them on their first ever camping trip.

Sue’s dedication and passion are evident in everything she does

Ms Walker also volunteered as county commissioner for Fife before stepping up to take on the role of Girlguiding Scotland’s chief commissioner, the charity’s lead volunteer.

Since then, she has helped Girlguiding Scotland to grow and develop, as the organisation celebrated two milestones marking 100 years of Brownies and The Senior Section.

Ms Walker said: “I was really touched – and completely surprised - to receive the Laurel Award. Over the last five years as Girlguiding Scotland’s chief commissioner, I’ve been privileged to work with a brilliant team of volunteers and staff to help make sure as many girls as possible can join in the fun and adventure of Girlguiding and benefit from all that we do.

“There have been so many highlights from my time as a volunteer – from dancing and singing along with 8,000 girls at Girlguiding Scotland’s biggest ever Tartan Gig, to stargazing with my Brownies at a special space-themed sleepover.

“Girlguiding Scotland has given me so many opportunities to develop my own skills, take on new adventures and make life-long friendships – all while empowering girls and young women to do the same.”

Eileen Martin, Girlguiding Scotland deputy chief commissioner, added: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Sue, as one of her deputies, and see her enthusiasm for Girlguiding Scotland shine through.

“Sue has a true talent for bringing people together, for recognising their talents and supporting them to say yes to new challenges and achieve amazing things. Whether it’s having fun with her own Brownies or welcoming new volunteers– Sue’s dedication and passion are evident in everything she does and she’s hugely deserving of this honour.”
