Sir Chris Hohn spoke after donating an additional sum to cover gaps left by budgets being slashed.
Britain’s biggest philanthropist has slammed “cruel” international aid cuts imposed at home and abroad.
Sir Chris Hohn, a billionaire hedge fund manager and co-founder of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, has given away billions to charities in recent decades.
Worth more than $70billion, donated $923million last year, including an additional $328m through the foundation to help “fill the gap” left by aid cuts.
The UK, as well as other Western countries, have massively slashed overseas aid.
In February Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced his Labour Government would cut the official Development Assistance (ODA) budget by a further 40%, following years of reduced spending.
ODA will now be reduced to 0.3% of gross national income from 2027, with reductions already in place.
Mr Hohn said: “A lot of lives, maybe in the millions, have been lost because of these very cruel policies
“The foundation is doing what we can to fill, in a small way, some of these enormous gaps.”
