Voting underway in Scottish Youth Parliament elections

Ballot boxes open until next Friday

Voting has now begun to find the next batch of Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs).

After months of campaigning, young people aged 14-25 can now cast their vote to elect their local MSYP – just like in the elections for the main Scottish Parliament.

Young people, who register via YoungScot, can cast their vote by submitting a paper ballot or using an e-voting system, depending on the method chosen by their local authority.

Speaking about the 2015 SYP elections, Louise Cameron MSYP, Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament, said: “This is a hugely momentous occasion for Scotland’s young people, and with the proven enthusiasm and commitment of young people at the forefront of shaping our society, these elections are an exciting time for everyone in Scotland.

I hope that everyone engages with the election campaigns taking place in their local area, and casts a vote for the candidate they would like to represent their views

“Being a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament is a truly life-changing experience. I hope that everyone engages with the election campaigns taking place in their local area, and casts a vote for the candidate they would like to represent their views in the Scottish Youth Parliament.”

Fiona McLeod, acting minister for young people, said: “Our young people are an asset to our society and it’s important that they are given every opportunity to make sure their voices are heard. The Scottish Youth Parliament is a great way for young people to participate and have a real influence in local and national decisions which can make Scotland a better place to live. I welcome the high number who have expressed an interest in standing for this year’s elections.

“Around 90% of 16 and 17 year olds in Scotland registered to vote in the referendum and we are keen to build on this fantastic level of participation and engagement. That’s why we are bringing forward legislation to give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in Scottish Parliament and local government elections as soon as the power is transferred from Westminster.”

Ballot boxes will remain open until Friday, 13 March 2015 – with results announced shortly afterwards.
