Thanks to an innovative app, finding volunteering opportunities across Edinburgh and the Lothians is now easier than ever

Even the smallest act of kindness can have a big impact on others.

So, to mark World Kindness Day on Thursday, 13 November, the team at Volunteer Centre East Lothian (VCEL) is encouraging more people to show compassion, unity and kindness to others through voluntary work.

And thanks to their interactive Locator app, finding volunteering opportunities in East Lothian, and across Edinburgh and the Lothians, is now easier and more accessible than ever.

The VCEL Locator features more than 700 services from over 600 organisations, all illustrated on an interactive map of the region.

Each entry includes the service and organisation name, a description of the service and contact details, making it as easy as possible for willing volunteers to find opportunities in their area.

Anyone can view the free-to-access app on the VCEL website, and voluntary and community groups, charities, social enterprises and any other third sector organisations can upload their services to appear on the Locator map.

From helping in the fight against climate change, to tackling poverty and inspiring the next generation to reach their full potential, the team at this third sector interface is keen to highlight the huge range of projects that locals can get involved in.

VCEL chief officer Maureen Allan said: “There are so many benefits of volunteering. From boosting physical health and improving mental wellbeing, to the confidence and pride that comes from knowing you’re making a positive difference to society.

“You never knowwhat opportunities may arise from volunteering – the connections you could make, the things you might discover, the path that may open up before you.

“Get interactive, get involved and be open to the opportunities that could follow on World Kindness Day and beyond.”

A full list of volunteer opportunities is available to view on the VCEL Locator at www.volunteereastlothian.org.uk/vcel-locator.
